My daughter is now a mighty toddler and has all this crazy amazing stories and her latest obsession is slime. Is my white couch terrified? Yes, yes it is.

For a while now, I have been wanting to play around with character design or character illustration in general. One of the trickiest things about character design is that you need to define and understand the character before sketching. What’s the character’s personality like?, Backstory? Traits? This can helps us create a design that is consistent with the character’s essence.

So, I figured starting out with my kids would make the job a bit easier.

Discovery

I gathered a few images and colors I liked. I definitely wanted an “Adventure Time”-esque look. I also just love fantasy so I knew I wanted swords, and scrolls and bright colors.

As far as the character story, this is what I came up with:

“Once upon a time, in a world of fantasy and magic, there was a powerful wizard named Tin. She was known throughout the land as a hero who had defeated many evil creatures and protected the innocent.

One day, Tin received news that a village was under attack by a swarm of slimy monsters called slimes. They were small and easy to defeat individually, but in large numbers, they could overwhelm even the bravest warriors. She conjured a magic sword, hurling it towards the swarm of slimes. As she swung the sword, the slimes shrieked and screeched, their bodies melting away. She saved the day once again!”

Painting

I knew from the start this was going to be a digital illustration because of the style I was going for so I went to trusty Ipad and used the Procreate app. For sketching I used the Narinder pencil. For lining I used the Dry brush inker. For painting I used a monoline brush.

Sketch.
Palette Exploration.
Finished Piece.
